A popular choice for input to a Convolutional Neural Network in audio classification problems are Mel-transformed spectrograms. We, however, show in this paper that a Constant-Q-transformed input improves results. Furthermore, we evaluated critical parameters such as the number of necessary bands and filter sizes in a Convolutional Neural Network. These are non-trivial in audio tasks due to the different semantics of the two axes of the input data: time vs. frequency. Finally, we propose a parallel (graph-based) neural network architecture which captures relevant audio characteristics both in time and in frequency. Our approach shows a 10.7 % relative improvement of the baseline system of the DCASE 2016 Acoustic Scenes Classification task.},

  abstract = {The set of audio treatment methods commonly used in many FM radio and in today mastering process of popular music tends to increase the loudness perception of the final audio product, obtaining a loud but ?flat? sound.  This satisfies the majors for commercial purposes, but the bad effects introduced are dynamic range reduction, poor transients and loss in fidelity at the end.
  We have proposed a method for time domain transient restoration of recorded music that recovers the clarity similar that of live performance.
  The algorithm is easily implementable with low cost Digital Signal Processors i.e. in stand alone devices or included in HW (iPod like) or SW (Winamp like) audio player applications. The way to automatically tune the effect by onthe- fly features extraction from the played songs is under study.
  This goal is pursued jointly with a research group of Tech. Univ of Wien working in music classification and retrival, in the framework of EU MUSCLE-NoE project.},
