Short Description and Results
For more than 10 years the empirical software engineering discipline discusses about the generalization from empirical studies conducted in University settings with students (in vitro). On the one hand, the students are available anyway, the studies provide lots opportunities of control and are reasonable cheap to conduct. On the other hand, if they could chose, most people would prefer studies conducted in real life (in vivo). In vivo (Latin for "within the living") would mean with real software engineers, within a real project context, real size,...
What are the challenges?
Building on a common experience in empirical software engineering of more than forty years, the presenters will talk about all aspects that have to be taken into account in all steps of in vivo studies.
