Yogyakarta is commonly called the 'cultural heart' and 'soul city' of Java. Yogyakarta history extends to 9th century, when Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms were the dominant civilizations in the region. During this early period, magnificent religious buildings, such as Borobudur (a UNESCO World Heritage), Ratu Boko and Prambanan, were constructed. More than the cultural heritages, Yogyakarta has beautiful natural panorama. The green rice fields cover the suburban areas with a background of the Merapi Mountain. The city is a center of art, and has wide range of tourist facilities.
