Introduction

The Austrian Research Studio Digital Memory Engineering conducts industry-oriented research and development in the field of digital preservation. While most current projects dealing with digital preservation focus on digital library and archive holdings, the RS-DME project's research is oriented on the needs of small and medium enterprises (SME) and individual users.

Project results will be software tools as well as a Digital Preservation System that will, depending on the specifications of the projects industry partners, combine pre-existing web services and applications..

The Research Studio bases its expected outcomes on the research of other successful projects and will, supported by its industry partners, develop a market oriented solution.

The Research Studio Digital Memory Engineering (RS-DME) is a project funded by the Österreichische Forschungsförderungs-gesellschaft mbH (FFG) under the Research Studios Austria (RSA) programme.

Research Aspects

  • Workflow based support for business archiving solution
Identifies possible strategies for the integration of standards based (i.e. OAIS) long-term preservation and best-practice models (like TRAC or Nestor) with existing Enterprise Content Management Systems.
  • Long term preservation of multimedia content
Provides strategies for the long-term preservation of systems with integrated multimedia objects (wikis, on-line archives, etc.), as well as tools for the creation, archiving, and restoration of metadata-based multimedia content.
  • Archiving solutions for small institutions and SOHOs (Small offices and home offices)
presents a new approach to (semi-)automate digital preservation system that are suited to the needs with limited expertise in data management and preservation. The underlying principle of the system is providing a best effort solution with respect to the available technology and skills of the users. Hoppla archiving system combines back-up and fully automated migration services for data collections in small institution settings.
